BPA Free Baby Bottles

It seems hardly a day goes by when another toxic product is discovered in our daily lives. Now we have Bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is a synthetic chemical used to make baby plastic bottles. It has been used for many years to make a variety of baby products and recently news have resurfaced that the chemical can leech out and cause harm to the baby. Tests done in small animals reveal that even minute doses of Bisphenol A are highly toxic. Today, every medical problem in the baby is being blamed on Bisphenol A. There are claims that Bisphenol A causes hyperactive behavior, obesity, decreases attention span, induces spontaneous anger, causes disruptive behavior spells and may even act like a carcinogen.

The Bisphenol controversy has now got the parents, the government and the industry into an argument about the chemical and its potential toxicity. Canada is the first country to put the ban of BPA into action. We as parents want the industry to stop using the chemical at once. Considering the current economic times, shutting down a major plastic industry would create more economic havoc in many people’s lives and may not be feasible. Also we need to remember that Bisphenol A is not the only chemical used to make plastic bottles. Our world is full of chemicals and so to blame just one chemical for all the ailments in a baby is premature. Please see the additional links on our site to get the full facts on BPA.

Nevertheless, to remain on the safe side it is highly recommended that all concerned parents buy BPA Free Baby Bottles. The baby manufacturing industry has taken steps to avoid Bisphenol A in their products and some of the bottles which are free of Bisphenol A include the following:

  • Born Free. While these bottles are also made from plastic they are free from Bisphenol A. Born Free also makes glass bottles which have a vent to prevent excessive gas and cramps in a baby.

  • Green to Grow is also free of BPA and phthalates

  • The Adiri Natural Nurser Bottle is a highly recommended BPA free bottle because of its nipple like shape

  • Think baby bottles are free from not only BPA but also lead, phthalates or nitrosamines

  • Siliskin bottles and Dr. Brown’s glass bottles also do not contain BPA and are an excellent glass bottle alternative

These are just some of the products which do not contain Bisphenol A. One thing you have to know is that all these BPA free baby bottles are more costly than of its regular counterpart. What remains to be seen is how many of these babies who are fed on BPA free bottles will develop symptoms related to the feeding from BPA bottles.

A panel of independent FDA science advisers has characterized as inadequate the evidence the agency used last month to determine that the common chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is safe to use in food packaging.

In a draft report, the FDA’s science board subcommittee on bisphenol A criticized the agency for using only two industry-sponsored trials from a deep pool of BPA studies to conclude that the margins of safety for the chemical in food applications are acceptable.

Bisphenol A is a chemical used to make rigid plastic (the most common chemical indicated by a #7 recycling symbol) and epoxy for food can linings. It is found in nearly all Americans. It is used to make baby bottles, sports bottles, infant formula can linings, and dental sealants.
